An Interview With Hannah Vail From Han* Clothing

Meet Hannah Vail. Throughout education Hannah always had a passion for creativity and wanted a career path in fashion and textiles. Leaving school, Hannah was advised to study foundation art at the North West Regional College in Derry. This course gave Hannah the opportunity to try a few things out and decide what area of study she liked the best.

After completing this course, Hannah applied to a number of universities across the UK to study fashion. Hannah also applied to a course in Amsterdam and decided to accept their acceptance offer. However after realising this course wasn’t for her, Hannah moved back home and was given a place in Ulster University Belfast

After graduating in 2016, Hannah took part in a graduate programme in a fashion and textiles centre in Derry. At Christmas time, Hannah was given the opportunity to produce fashion items that would be sold at a 10-day popup in a space at the Craft Village in Derry. Hannah decided to combine her illustrations with casual wear by printing them onto a range of clothing. All of Hannah’s stock sold out at the event and this led to the birth of Han* in 2017.

In this episode Hannah discusses careers in the fashion industry, how to build an effective portfolio and offers advice for anyone who is interested in a career in the fashion industry or setting up their own business.

Here are some items of clothing that have been designed by Hannah, featuring her own illustrations.
