Linley Hamilton is a musician, lecturer and radio broadcaster based in Northern Ireland.

Linley is a Doctor of Music and lecturer at the Magee campus in Ulster University. Here he specialises in Jazz, Music Business and Work Placement. 

He also currently presents the show Jazz World on BBC Radio Ulster and plays the trumpet and flugelhorn in his own jazz quartet.

In this episode, Linley discusses life as a musician, careers in the music industry and how to make the most of your music degree during covid.

More About Linley

After leaving school Linley studied a degree in civil engineering and worked as an engineer for five years. At the age of 27, Linley left his career as an engineer to join the Commitments World Tour and pursue a full time career as a musician. 

Linley fell in love with music and became an artist within the jazz world. He has played as a session musician for world-renowned artists, including Van MorrisonPaul Brady and Foy Vance. In total, Linley has recorded 150 albums as a session player and has released 5 solo records. He released his first solo album in 2008 and since then two of his albums have occupied the US Jazz week radio play charts for 20 weeks.

For the past 13 years, Linley has presented a BBC radio jazz programme called Jazz World on a Saturday night. Here Linley plays the best contemporary jazz from the Irish jazz scene and around the world and highlights profiles of local and touring performers.

At the age of 40 Linley received his first qualification in music when he was invited to study a masters in music. He received a first class honours in his masters and continued his studies by completing  a PhD. Linley is now a Dr. of music and in 2015 he started to lecture at the Magee campus in Ulster University
